The cleaners have not removed the black negligée.

One of the great lessons of the Kremlin cathedrals is how indebted Russian avant-garde art—with its black crosses, circles, squares and flattened space—is to the tradition of icon painting. Malevich’s black square could have been lifted from the garment of any of a great number of saints.

At least as prominent as the squares and crosses in this city of squares and crosses is the onion dome—a form perfectly calibrated so that no snow can gather upon it. Hence the commonplace utterance: ‘We must be as onions upon which the snow of this world falls.’ Alleviated from such load-bearing, the onion domes of Moscow are destined to outlast even the city’s crosses, rectangles and the black and red squares.
